May 2024
Welcome to AGM and “Trash and Treasure” night by Viive
The “trash and treasure” event was enjoyed by all at the May meeting. There was plenty of good donations and plenty to choose from. Most members took home a little something, mostly less, but sometimes more than what they brought. Annie will take the left-over items to give to The Sewing Basket. Success!
Show and Tell
Lynne started us off with a very colourful machine applique “I Spy.” The pattern from Red Boot Quilts and Lynne made it for Charlie, 2 years old, who has graduated to a “big bed”.
Carmel showed a bag she had recently completed. Sue Olma had been the recipient of a “hexagon quilt as you go” bag made by her friend Janne, and it was admired by Carmel. Carmel then copied the construction method and fussy cut dragonflies as the focus of each block. It piqued CQI members memories of Daiva’s Christmas hexagon runner workshop maybe 14 years ago. Another time possibly 20 years ago, another workshop was run where members made two of these blocks and then they were all raffled off. The winner could join them to make a small quilt. My recollection is that Marilyn Horwood won those. Postscript: the exact pattern was found in the Trash and Treasure donations by Carmel. What a coincidence! She has taken it home to use for another bag! Everything old is new again….
Dawn had the exciting news about a “road trip” she and Kim Dolan were taking to Sale, Victoria to see: Annemieke Mein: A Life’s Work-A Retrospective. This is on from March 2nd to May 26th at the Gippsland Art Gallery. Coinciding with her 80th birthday will be the most comprehensive retrospective of her work ever seen. She is a Dutch-born Australian textile artist, who has drawn acclaim nationally and from abroad for her vivid recreations of Australian native fauna and flora. I am sure we all wish we were going too.
Kim showed several blocks she has put together from a Xmas kit she purchased on Ebay many years ago. Di Bixley and Kim go away for weekends together at Di’s holiday home. Here they do some sewing, and this is the project Kim takes with her. The patterns are by Verna Mosquera and will be completed with embroidery.
Jill showed a tiny cross stitch.
Fiona (visitor and daughter of Janice) held up a crotchet project that has been keeping her busy. The story revolves around uniting all the family football teams and their colours in each blanket. She intends to make more for family members.
Janice talked about her 85th birthday party where 20 family members attended.
Sue brought along two lovely children’s community quilts that will be given to the Women’s refuge. Carmel and Christine volunteered to do the binding.
Annie brought along a mauve community quilt backing she has been putting together and a finished block for her next charity quilt project, both for the Women’s Refuge. She has also been making neat little cutlery bags with a drawstring top and pot handle protectors. Both very useful items.
Bronwyn, once again brought along five quilts, all pieced, quilted and bound by prolific quilter and friend, Pamela Ross. We are pleased to receive these lovely quilts on a regular basis and as it motivates us to keep up our own donations!
