April 2024
Tonight is Travel Theme Night. You were asked to bring along a holiday item and share memories/ stories with the group. Many stories told of many locations around the globe. Memories and souvenirs from the time mesmerised us all. We are certainly a well-travelled group.
Jill – 1990 Switzerland trip. Some lace from Zermat and a strudel tea towel purchased after a strudel demonstration from a castle in Vienna
Janice – Bergen. Margaret Goldman purchased and started a Xmas cross stitch advent calendar and Janice is finishing it. Absolutely exquisite!
Judith – In Russia during the Olympics. Some Khokhloma painted vintage bowls and spoons. Traditional Russian, very colourful floral designs.

Judith bought soft stone statue in Russia in 1980
Helen – spoke about an ivory necklace from a trip to India 50 years ago. She will wear it to the next meeting if she can find it!
Sue Pilgrim – A teapot, what a surprise! Sue has collected more than 100 teapots from all over the world. This one being special because it is a London Telephone Box she got for free (by accident).

Sue bought teapot in London on trip with family
Rosemary – Around the world with Rosemary on her various travel adventures! Started in 1976 travelling around England. She brought along a few special items to share with us.

Rosemary first traveled in 1976 to England, Scandinavia & Russia. She recently went to Paris and bought liberty fabric & made night dress.

Rosemary bought liberty yardage in England & will make a shirt one day. But has used as a shawl.

Rosemary bought miniature tea set in Versailles

Fabric bought in Rarotonga Fiji and made dress

Cross stitch and pulled threadwork done on the way home from England.

Bought in Lake Como in Italy
Ros – Brought along some Latvian dolls in cultural attire and some framed cross stitch bookmarks which are a traditional swap item for special occasions. Very interesting and wonderful idea. (Reminded us of modern-day Taylor Swift’s idea of swapping friendship bracelets).
Carmel – has a great interest in knitting and felting and brought along items (vase and oven mitt) she felted using wool from her travels. Also, a cushion cover from Lake Titicaca made by the women living on the islands made of straw. (Note to self- where is mine?)

In Alasca bought a kit to felt vase
Christine – During a visit to France in 2014 she bought a 19th century antique “calling card” wallet embossed and inlaid with mother of pearl. It was broken and she had it restored to its former glory.
Lorraine – In 2011 a visit to an antique shop in a tiny Parisian street, Lorraine purchased a tiny snuff box over 100 years old a decorated with moonstone. The hilarious story was this over 80-year-old Parisian male antique dealer, who spoke no English, had the audacity to pinch the bottom of Lorraine daughter-in-law. Now that is French!
Annie – Annie travelled from the time she was 15 around the world until she married and “settled down”. Her silver charm bracelet is testament to all the places travelled as she collected a charm from each place/ country. Her collection was presented in alphabetical order very organised. She chronicled her journeys with maps which she brought along.

Annie did 2 month trip around USA on camping trip

Annie collected a charm in each country she visited
Julie-Ann – When she was 19, she went to Bali and had an idyllic holiday in the natural unspoiled island setting. 15 years later when she returned it was still beautiful but very different! Not primitive but luxury ++
Lynne – She lived in South Africa for years and has many special items at home adorning the walls. Her favourite is some Zulu warriors too precious and delicate to move. However, she has a diamond necklace her husband gave her for her 40th birthday to remember their time there.
Dawn – Dawn told us about a wonderful trip to Japan She experienced sleeping on floor, communal bathing, the bullet train, visiting Hiroshima, and of the course the wonderful Tokyo Quilt Show! She purchased a Shibori kimono embroidered by hand, simply gorgeous!

Viive – From her last holiday cruising on a gullet on the Aegean Sea, Viive found the Pythagoras goblet, an invention by Greek Philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras.

Bought cup in Samos – Viive – Aegean Island – Pythagorean cup used to measure drink so that everyone gets the same amount
Sue – Wedding memorabilia from Charles and Di, still waiting for it to be worth something!
