October 2023
October meeting: A huge thank you to Lynne for guiding us through the making of a design board. Everyone agreed it was a great night and are very happy with their efforts. Thanks for Ros for the corflute.
Show and Tell:
Bronwyn showed us 2 quilts. The first one made for her Mum’s 100th birthday but finished it in time for her 101st birthday! The daffodils and violets were reminiscent of her childhood growing, picking and selling them. It was really beautiful. The second was a landscape quilt she made and has now given to the family as a memorial remembrance of her much loved nephew who passed away. The scene resembles the property they lived on.
Judith had an amusing tell about her being a “star” customer at the shop in Richmond.
Lynne had been to Chicago to visit her daughter and family and they surprised her by organising a reunion involving a long-ago exchange student. Lynne really had no idea! She also commented that even in the US quilt shops are closing at an alarming rate. We are reminded to support the shop we have!
Julie-Ann was getting ready for Halloween and got a few suggestions to visit Kmart and Spotlight for extra supplies.
Kim had been on her own enjoyable sewing retreat with Dianne Bixley at Lake Macquarie. Also, she had quilted for a client who won a Blue Ribbon at the recent Quilt NSW Show. It was an excellent quilt and the quilting was very complementary.
Annie completed a Monica Poole block kit of a possum and it was suggested that she attach it to a canvas to hang. She also brought along a community quilt she had been working on for months. It turned out great! She brought along a flannel quilt backed with polar fleece that was given to her daughter many years ago to show how good it still looked after all those years.
Cheridan was asked if she had any Show or Tell. We discovered she had been on a trip to Borneo living among the gorillas! We were enthralled with her story as no-one had ever done anything like that!
Karen had also been travelling to England, Ireland, Scotland and Iceland. I know she enjoyed the holidays.
Lorraine showed some quirky items she had acquired lately. An embroidered seed pod and pineapple coasters that her daughter bought in Hawaii.
Karen has received a thank you back from “The Sanctuary”. It was lovely to see all those quilts displayed in the back of the representative’s car. She said “It was wonderful to have these precious quilts to brighten the lives of the women and children when they arrive to stay. When each woman leaves, she takes her quilt with her to remind her just how strong and special she is.”
That’s why we do it!
